4 Signs It's Time To Rebuild Or Replace Your Wood Fence

Blog

A well-built wooden fence should last for quite a while, but over time the natural material will start to fade, crack, warp, or otherwise become damaged with age and the elements. It's time to call your wood fence services company to rebuild or replace your wood fence when the following issues have popped up.

Your fence has several panels leaning

A single leaning wood fence panel is not a major fix and can be easily repaired by your wood fence services company, but more panels leaning than standing is cause for total wood fence rebuilding or replacement. The reason for this is lack of support: the leaning fence panels are likely to pull others down as they lean, pulling out nails and breaking or bending support pieces.

Your wood fence services company will first check the fence to see if your wood panels are worth salvaging, and will prop the fence back up again, adding new panels as needed. However, if the entire fence is leaning and is otherwise old or damaged, they might recommend replacing the fence instead.

Your fence has ample weather damage

Sealing or painting your wood fence will help it last longer. Even with these efforts, however, a wood fence will still warp and wear down with time. The tops of wood panels can become jagged and pitted or knots in the fencing can start to crack. Support beams can become swollen and rotted with moisture damage, and gates can become crooked and bent. Weather damage can take such a toll that the fence becomes an eventual eyesore, in which case it's most cost-effective to simply replace the fence.

Your fence is made of the wrong wood

While cedar and redwood are the more common types of wood used in wood fencing projects, pine and other woods have been used as well, especially in homemade fences. The reason cedar and redwood are so often used in wood fencing is that both types of wood are known to be insect and water-resistant. Choosing the correct wood for your fence will help it last longer, so if you want to upgrade your fence or give it some greater structure, talk to your wood fence services company about rebuilding or completely replacing your fence.

Every wood fence project has its own cost, due to labor and supplies used in construction. Get a good faith estimate for your fencing project from your residential wood fencing company to know how much your fencing project will cost.
