Ask Who Is Responsible For Prep Work When Picking A Fencing Company

Blog

A fence is often the finishing touch on a new home construction or series of property upgrades. They also serve a practical purpose for families when children need boundaries for playing, and on rural properties where pets and livestock require a borderline for grazing, and to prevent trespassing. Obtaining a fencing company's services can remove many of the headaches associated with building a fence.

Always contact multiple fencing contractors to obtain quotes. It's also a good idea to develop a series of standard inquiries to assess the expertise and the pre-construction workload the company absorbs versus the property owner.

Zoning board approval and permits

The location of a home or property dictates the number of zoning rules and ordinances that may govern its use and regulate the scope of any improvement project. Historical districts, other government-designated districts, and homeowner associations are just some of the entities it may be necessary to coordinate with prior to fence installation. Typical regulations could cover fencing style, height, and even paint color.

Ask a fencing contractor if they attend to any necessary paperwork, such as obtaining a permit and requesting permission from zoning boards. If they prefer not to appear before committees prior to a project, they may be able to provide the paperwork necessary to present to the board, such as design plans, fence measurements, and even schematic drawings.

Prep work required

The amount of initial work the property owner is responsible for is an essential question to cover when obtaining quotes. General requirements would include clearing the land for the fence if it moved through wooded areas or tall grass and providing a land survey detailing the boundaries of a property before installation commenced. Aspects that are a bit more flexible include setting up markers for the entire perimeter of the fence or flagging the entire perimeter for installation.

Utility company contacts

Another consideration when setting fence posts is the possibility of making contact with underground utility lines and pipes. Be prepared to provide a contractor with an outline of the location of piping and underground wires near a home or outbuilding to help with fence location in these areas. However, fence paths often trace the borders of a property where utility lines for a larger geographical area may be located. Electrical and gas companies should be contacted prior to digging to clear an area. Determine in advance who is responsible for gathering this information and using it to adjust the fence line.
